What? No, don't use Fraps. Open up Xfire and display Xfire FPS. That's the best damn way and it takes up like no resources. It doesn't get in the way and it even lets you do the the stuff Fraps does. Plus you get the time, which is always handy

Uh, FRAPs doesn't use any more resources than Xfire to show FPS, and not everyone wants Xfire.
Personally, I use DXTory, as it's a better video recorder than FRAPs and Xfire combined.

You can also use MSI Afterburner, since basically you can show not only FPS, but also show temperatures and how much GPU and memory resources are being used; all in-game. Even better, MSI Afterburner can also record video with audio just like FRAPS, but unlike FRAPS, it doesn't boggle down your framerate as much, and you can even tell it to record at a downscaled resolution while you play your game in your own preferred resolution; all done in real time. I currently use it to determine FPS online and I haven't been kicked or anything.
