Sorry if I am asking an dumb questions here folks, I am new to this forum, but an oldie to games, having played FPS shooters since the first one came out ( yep, I still stink at em to! ) but I am having zero luck with Steam support on this one.

I have bought 29 games from Steam, all have downloaded and still play to this day perfectly, however, when I purchased Nexuiz, I found that I could not even get an opening screen. Instead, I get an error screen that says " A completly anonymous error has occurred". A report has been generated and sent to us. However, when I asked Steam for help with the "report" that apparently had been sent to them, after the usual " try and reload the game, check the integrity of the game cashe, things that I had of course already tried several times before ever contacting Steam, they gave up and said they would no longer provide support, rather I would have to go to the third party route, so the link they game me sent me here.

I have seen and used the suggestions listed for others such as trying to use the installers located in the Steam/apps/directory but to no avail. Considering that re-installs have no effect, as well as secondary installers or game cashe, etc, can anyone perhaps give me an idea what on earth a"anonymous" error is? I am thinking that is a term of anything that they have no idea what it is, but I have the same knowledge of the workings of a computer as does the long tailed three ringed gibbon monkey Posted Image

Any help would greatly be appreciated, I stink at playing these FPS games, but love playing them anyway, but am worse at understanding computer terms and getting into the guts on one trying to fix a problem that I don't have the slightest idea on how to proceed.

Here are my system specs if it helps.

I7-940 @ 4GHz
6 GB DDR 3
AMD 6970
Western Digital 300 GB Raptor
Western Digital 750 GB Black Edition
Creative SB X-FI
Killer NIC
32" LG HD Monitor

Thanks again!

This is a very strange problem, and i can't help myself. I've never heard of such an error... however, with a little luck, the developers will know more. so rest assured! they read these forums daily, so they *will* see your problem. I wish you all the luck in the world for getting it fixed!

In your specs i'm not seeing any OS could you provide us with that? also can you add these lines of text into your system.cfg

-- Add these lines
log_verbosity = 4
net_log = 1
log_WriteToFile = 1
log_WriteToFileVerbosity = 4

This is located in program Files>steam>Steamapps>common>nexuiz

Once you have those lines saved in the document (open with notepad if needed) launch the game normally. After the crash happens re enter the same directory copy& zip the 'game.log' file and post it in this thread. This could help us find out whats going.

Thanks.

Sorry for leaving out my OS....Windows 7, 64 bit. All drivers for my video card, sound card, etc are religiously kept up to date. I did point out but wanted to emphasize again that in addition to the other 29 games in my Steam library, I have perhaps twice that many that are not in the Steam folder and they all play just great. In fact, I am blessed to have so many games that play perfectly with no need for any attention from me.... other than my usual pitiful attempt at trying to actually kill some of those creatures that are always chasing me around and my clear lack of skill in the FPS arena, even after 30 years with my finger on the trigger!

Point is though...I keep very good care of my system to the best of my ability to try and avoid trouble since I know I am gonna stink at trying to fix it when it happens. I run Malwarbytes, virus scans, etc constantly, as well as other diagnostic tools when the slightest odd thing should pop up like Sandra, Tweak 7, HWINFO64, Core Temp, I run a host of others at times to keep check and for years I have managed to have ( lotta blind luck involved here I think :) a very trouble free system.

And, it still is. All the other games run fine. This is such an odd error code. ILLFONIC, thank you so much for the advice you have laid out for me....I have to be honest and just come out and say it, what you have asked me to do, well, I am gonna give it a try but frankly, it is about three clicks above my pay grade! I guess perhaps a downside of never having trouble is never learning how to dig deep and fix stuff, but although I always seemed to have a knack for building fast gaming computers, something anyone can do, I never did learn anything about the OS that was inside them. And by anything, I pretty much mean anything. I am pretty old as gamers go, 60 as a matter of fact. And I am disabled, I broke my back at age 49 in a car accident, I found out that I actually could NOT drive to work in my sleep as I had been telling my co workers for the previous 20 years!

So one would think that I would/should certainly know at least the basics on this type of troubleshooting. But, the 24/7 pain that the 13 hour surgery left me in and the medicine I have to take 4 times a day pretty much takes the sting out of my jab, so I really do stink at all of this. But I will certainly give it a shot, and cross my fingers and hope I do not set off a low yield tactical nuke in the guts of the program!

Thanks again folks for your input on this, I do appreciate it.

Sorry to hear about your accident! :( if anything gets horribly messed up you can reinstall nexuiz that should revert any changes you made. feel free to post back in here in you need any additional help

IIRC, the "anonymous" error is from sending an anonymous error report to IllFonic when the crash occurs.
At least, it sounds like that crash.

As for why, I don't know. Maybe Echon has an idea, but it seems to be one of those things that crops up for some people on some systems and not for others. Maybe it's a memory issue?

Try disabling your sound card and using onboard sound.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. Unfortunately, so far, we have not hit a nerve yet. As to the reinstall of the game, I did that as the first order of business after the "verify game cashe..." four times in fact, all to no avail. I did disable the sound card as you suggested Mouse ( good idea to, I should have thought of that ) but alas, not luck there either.

Same, " Nexuiz has encounter a fatal error" followed by the paragraph starting with the odd "completely anonymous error" statement, so as far as reverting back to any changes I may have made....well, that is the problem, I have never got past this very first error page ( which is not even a full page, just a little box! ) so i have never been able to even see a menu or anything like that, in fact, I have no idea what the game even looks like, I just bought it so I could have a peek at the CryENGINE 3.

Thanks to all of you that are giving this a shot, I know it is asking a lot to try and figure out such an odd problem with so little to go on, kinda like the car that acts up until you get it in front of a mechanic :) I will give anything that you think is worth it a try, including the things ILLFONIC wants me to do to my system :) I suspect he knows exactly what he is talking about!

Now, if I just knew even kinda what I was talking about........

Thanks again.

Are you sure your DirectX, .net, ect are all up to date, and include all of the packages for Nexuiz?(in the Steamapps/Nexuiz/install folder)
Aside from that, all I can think of is completely uninstalling your sound card and network card.

First navigate to your Hard drive you have nexuiz installed on, / steam 'C' go into programfilesx86 > steam > steamapps > common > nexuiz. Open system.cfg or system with notepad -- Add these lines at the very bottom of the file. you can copy paste.

log_verbosity = 4
net_log = 1
log_WriteToFile = 1
log_WriteToFileVerbosity = 4

Save the new file
After thats done launch the game like you normally would, when it crashes navigate to the same location copy the GAME.LOG file that is located there zip it and attach it to a post in this thread.

I know that all the Direct X is current, I watch that like a Great Horned Owl with all the games I play, ( in fact, that is all I do with my computer, and E mail :) I guess I could try and uninstall the sound card, disabling it had no effect, is there a known issue with this game and certain sound cards? I have so many games that still function perfectly with it I am just curious.

ILLFONIC, I will attempt to do as you have requested, I just have not had to attempt anything so ambitious before ( for me, I know it is blindfold material for most on this forum ) so there is no telling the outcome of such an adventure for me. But I have no other options left, worth a shot. Thanks to all!

Ok, I seriously doubt I did this correctly on my first try, but here it is. Maybe you can tell me what I did incorrectly and I will give it a whirl again, cause it pretty much looks like it did before only with the lines added to the bottom like you asked, not sure.

Thanks!

Crap! I spoke to soon. Now I am totally embarrassed! I have not used this forum before this post, and for the life of me I cannot find the "attachments" icon anywhere in that maze of icons above this script. Can someone be so kind as to tell me how to attach my file. Sorry for that. Geeze.......

You have to click "more reply options" first. There you will find an option to attach a file from your hard drive to your post .

Attached File  Nexuiz1.txt   847bytes   8 downloads Thanks Evil, I would have sat here for days......these meds might help me some with the pain, but they sure don't do much for an already dull mind! I will try this again and see if I can get that file attached that Tonez suggested.

I found the spot you are talking about, it does not attach the same way I am accustomed to, I don't think I even managed to attach a simple file correctly, no wonder I can't seem to get a game working Posted Image

Well, you attached a file succesfully, but it rather looks like you attached the system.cfg renamed as Nexuiz1.txt
Did you save it as system.cfg as well? You're supposed to.
After you did, just run the game, wait until it crashes and then look for a file called game.log in your Nexuiz directory and attach it to your next forum message.

I am back, will try and attach the proper files this time in a few hours. Yes, I did reinstall the proper C++ just in case, I actually did think of that one ( my dad always told me that every blind hog finds an acorn every now and then :) but to no avail.

Also, I may have forgot to mention to any that might be wondering, cause it did give me some pause. I have a very high overclock on my processor with stock cooling, I know it does not appear so at all to most at first until you look closely, I have a rather old I7-940, with a stock speed of 2.93, they were not nearly as friendly to ocking as the newer chips from Intel as all of you know of course. The fact sheet on these processors ( the 940 was kinda the red headed stepchild of the bunch, odd speed, did not sell well ) is that the older units will peg out at 3800 GHz, the newer ones struggle to maintain 4 GHz or so, I have just managed to get one of those chips we all hope to get out hands on that seems to eat up just about any setting I put on it and still keep cool and run well, despite having a odd looking cooler that is clearly not up to the task of much serious heavy lifting. This processor is at least 4 + years old, loves the juice, so i am glade to feed her!

However, I am well aware that despite fact that all is well with the OS at this clock speed and all my other games, not EVERY game is so tolerant of overclocking, so to rule it out as a possible suspect, I switched back and dropped out the 900MHz I have tacked on and went back to the default speed of 2.93. However, even that failed to impress the gremlin that has taken up home in Nexuiz.

I just wanted to let everyone know, all of you have been so kind and patient with an old, clearly outclassed gamer, I thought I need to do what little I can figure out on my own and pass it on.

Thanks, and I will post again in a few hours when the meds have kicked in and I can actually find stuff :)

I was running my processor at 4.1 GHz for quite a while, did not like the temps even though it continued to run without ever kicking off, rebooting, etc. I kept backing off and running Prime 95 until I found the right combination ( 173X22 ) and Dynamic CPU V core Offset [+160] until I got Prime to run for 30+ hours continuously with no temps on any of the eight threads reaching near 80C mark, all in the low 70's at 100% load, so although it is a few hundred MHz lower than I had been running, I just have to side with stability and cooler temps, and 900MHz over stock speed is a pretty cheap increase for two simple change in the bios taking all of 10 seconds :)

Clearly, I do not know what I am doing. I have tried to follow the instruction exactly as written, yet each time I try and start the game and have it crash again, when I return to Notepad and look up the same location as I saved the file ( or so I thought ) several things happen, none of which are correct I think, so I just saved several screens, but none of which i believe are the ones you are looking for.

The problem seems to be that no matter what I do, there is never a file called "game log" that you asked me to be on the look out for. Any idea what I may be doing wrong? Thanks again for bearing with me Posted Image

Well, will have to start a new post I guess, it claims that the three screen shots I took of the pages ( probably doing that wrong also ) already maxed out my 500K max quota, ( even the very first one ) so will have to figure out how I ever managed to post the first one! Honestly guys, this is getting crazy, it must seem like you are trying to teach a bull how to serve tea...not worth it probably, this is getting crazy.

At any rate, no matter what I do, I cannot get that line "game log" to appear after I put the lines I pasted in as you requested and running the game to the crash point. Geeze...... Thanks guys, but this is getting to the point of just taking to much of your time for what little I can offer you in the way of any meaningful help.

I am so sorry I am such a dunderhead at such simple stuff, it may as well be in Klingon for the most part :)
