Dynamic Mutator Question

I flat out have NO IDEA what is going on in the Dynamic Mutator section of the menu screen. What the hell are pips? What is any of that all about? Any information would be totally appreciated.

Also, has anyone had problems when playing with a party of 3 getting split up onto different teams? Any suggestions for ensuring that this doesn't happen?

Overall, a really fun game that I think has a bright future if it's handled well.
