Balanced Solutions to Nexuiz

05 April 2012 - 10:59 PM

The beginning of a game's life is very crucial to it's success, as problems/bugs will dissuade current players from continuing, less players leads to less full lobbies, more waiting leads to less players etc. etc.

I suggest you make some fixes soon, and here is a simple list of what to do:

#1 Once 3v3 is established in lobby, Allow 15 seconds until the game starts. Do not allow anyone to join the lobby unless there's TWO players in queue, in which case you can make it a 4v4.

Currently, a 30 seconds timer leads to a player to join or impatiently leave, continually restarting the timer. It's a really bad cycle of joining/leaving to get the perfect number 6 or 8.

#2 Allow for "Joining in Session" and prioritize placing players into EXISTING games

This is self-explanatory, with leavers and the small nature of teams.

#3 Do a jump-starter. Double XP weekend + Free trial for that weekend.

This makes current players return to Nexuiz, and new potential buyers try it out. Since the player count will peak during this weekend, the issues of half lobbies won't be a problem, persuading current and prospective players to continue playing.

New Player's thoughts and Advice for Potential buyers

05 April 2012 - 10:34 PM

I just bought Nexuiz and have played it for a fair amount. If you're thinking of buying the game, I'd like to give some advice, rather than the misleading stuff I read on here before buying it.

I'll start with the bad news:

#1 It takes a long time to get into a game. 1 minute is the minimum waiting time, it can go anywhere from 1-5 minutes, just because the game requires a strict 6 or 8 players, and people constantly go in and out of lobbies to prevent getting that perfect number. I'm not talking about after midnight or early morning, I'm talking about afternoon and evenings.

#2 There are a lot of leavers, and this ruins the game significantly. Since it's a small team number, even 1 person gone can upset the balance, especially on CTF. The problem is even worsened by the matchmaking system, since it never adds people to existing games. Since players know this, they will leave since they know a substitute/replacement won't be coming; therefore a leaver leads to the rest of the team leaving.

Good news

#1 Variety in guns are great. Mutators are very fun. The gunplay and arcade atmosphere is refreshing. Most of the maps are well designed.

#2. There is essentially no lag, and there'sy not many connection issues

How to fix the game

#1 Prioritize matchmaking system to place people in EXISTING games, rather than make new, half-empty lobbies
#2 Allow games to start 3v4, and just quickly add people from the matchmaking system (since it should prioritize adding people to existing games)
#3 Leavers should have a 10 minute delay to get back into a new game. Leaving because of an emergency or internet issues is understandable, but in those circumstances you wouldn't be planning to play a game right after leaving.
